Requirements for Studying Medicine in Ukraine (Admission Guide)

Ukraine has become a popular destination for international students who want to study medicine because of its affordable tuition fees, globally recognized medical degrees, and English-taught programs. If you are a student from Ghana, Africa, or anywhere else planning to pursue an MBBS or other medical program in Ukraine, here is a clear guide to the admission requirements.
1. Academic Requirements
To qualify for admission into medical universities in Ukraine, applicants must have:
•A high school certificate (WASSCE, A-levels, or equivalent).
•Strong grades in core science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
•A minimum of 50% in science subjects (for some universities, higher scores are required).
 2. Age Requirements
•Applicants must be at least 17 years old by the end of the admission year.
•There is usually no strict upper age limit, but younger candidates are often preferred.
3. Required Documents
You will need the following documents to apply:
•Valid international passport (minimum 2 years validity).
•High school certificate & transcripts.
•Completed application form.
•Medical certificate confirming good health (HIV test results may be required).
•Passport-sized photographs (usually 8–10).
•Admission/invitation letter from the university.
 4. Language Requirements
•Many Ukrainian medical universities offer English-taught programs, so you do not need to speak Ukrainian or Russian at the start.
•However, students may be required to take basic Ukrainian or Russian language classes during their studies (to communicate with patients during clinical practice).
5. Financial Requirements
•Tuition fees range from $3,500 – $5,000 per year depending on the university.
•Living costs are relatively affordable, about $1,500 – $2,500 per year.
•Students must show proof that they can cover both tuition and living expenses.
6. Visa Requirements
After receiving your admission/invitation letter from a Ukrainian university, you will need to apply for a student visa (Type D). Requirements include:
•Passport and admission letter.
•Visa application form.
•Proof of funds (bank statement or sponsorship letter).
•Medical insurance.
•Visa fee payment receipt.
7. Duration of Study
•The standard MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) program in Ukraine lasts 6 years.
•This includes pre-clinical and clinical studies, with the final year focused on internships.
Quick Tips for Applicants
•Apply early, as processing your invitation letter and visa can take several weeks.
•Always verify that the university is recognized by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine and internationally listed in directories such as WHO, WFME, and ECFMG.
•Prepare for licensing exams (e.g., USMLE, PLAB, or MDC exams in Ghana) if you plan to practice medicine outside Ukraine after graduation.
