How to Apply for University Admission in Kenya

Applying to a university in Kenya may seem stressful at first, but if you understand the process, it becomes much easier. Whether you’re a Kenyan student or an international applicant, this guide will walk you through the steps to successfully apply for admission.
1. Understand the University System in Kenya
Kenya has both public and private universities regulated by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
•Public universities admit students through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
•Private universities usually handle admissions directly through their websites or admissions offices.
2. Check Admission Requirements
Before applying, review the general and course-specific requirements.
•General Requirement (KCSE): A minimum mean grade of C+ (plus) is required for entry into public universities.
•Specific Programs:
•Medicine: A mean grade of B+ with strong grades in sciences.
•Engineering: A mean grade of B (plain) with good grades in mathematics and physics.
•Arts & Humanities: C+ and above, depending on the program.
For international students, equivalent qualifications (e.g., WASSCE, IGCSE, GCE, IB) are accepted, but they may need to be verified by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
3. Apply Through KUCCPS (For Public Universities)
If you’re applying to a public university:
1.Visit the KUCCPS portal (kuccps.ac.ke).
2.Register using your KCSE index number, birth certificate, or ID number.
3.Select your preferred degree/diploma/certificate programs.
4.Pay the application fee (usually via M-Pesa).
5.Submit your application before the deadline.
4. Apply Directly to Private Universities
For private universities like Strathmore, Daystar, or USIU–Africa:
1.Visit the university’s official website.
2.Download or fill out the online application form.
3.Upload required documents:
•Academic transcripts (KCSE/WASSCE/IGCSE, etc.)
•Copy of birth certificate/ID/passport
•Passport-size photos
•Application fee receipt
4.Submit and wait for an admission decision.
5. Prepare Supporting Documents
Make sure you have the following ready:
•Certified academic certificates
•Identification documents (passport/ID/birth certificate)
•Passport photos
•Application payment receipt
6. Check Admission Status
•For KUCCPS: Log in to your account to check placement results.
•For private universities: Wait for an email or admission letter.
7. Pay Fees and Confirm Admission
Once admitted:
•Pay the required acceptance fee or deposit.
•Organize for student ID, registration, and orientation.
•International students must apply for a Kenyan student visa through the immigration portal.
8. Attend Orientation and Start Classes
All universities organize orientation for new students to help them adapt to campus life and understand academic expectations.
Quick Tips:
•Apply early to secure your spot.
•Double-check deadlines for KUCCPS and private universities.
•For international students, begin your student visa process immediately after getting admission.
