Nursing is one of the most respected and in-demand professions in Ghana. Each year, thousands of students apply to various Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges (NMTCs) across the country. If you are planning to pursue a career in nursing or midwifery, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply for nursing training school in Ghana.
1. Check the Entry Requirements
Before you start your application, make sure you meet the minimum requirements:
•WASSCE Holders:
•Core subjects: At least C6 in English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
•Electives: At least C6 in three relevant electives (Science or Arts-based, depending on the nursing programme).
•SSSCE Holders:
•Core subjects: At least D in English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
•Electives: At least D in three relevant electives.
•Age Limit: Applicants should be 16–35 years old at the time of application.
2. Buy a Nursing Training College Application Voucher
•Application is done online through the Health Training Institutions Portal: https://healthtraining.gov.gh
•Purchase an application voucher (e-voucher) from any branch of:
•Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB)
•Agricultural Development Bank (ADB)
•The voucher contains a serial number and PIN you’ll use to log in.
3. Complete the Online Application Form
•Visit the portal: healthtraining.gov.gh
•Enter your serial number and PIN to start your application.
•Fill in personal details, academic qualifications, and select your preferred nursing training college and programme.
•Upload a passport-size photograph (as required).
You can choose up to 5 schools/programmes in order of preference.
4. Submit and Print Your Application
•Review your application carefully.
•Submit online and print a copy for your records.
5. Await SMS/Email Notification
•If shortlisted, you will receive an SMS or email inviting you for:
•Entrance Examination (for some programmes)
•Interview (mandatory for all applicants)
6. Attend the Interview
•The interview will test your communication skills, motivation for becoming a nurse, and knowledge of basic health-related issues.
•Bring along:
•Photocopies of certificates and results slips
•Birth certificate/National ID
•Printed copy of your application form
7. Admission and Fee Payment
•Successful applicants will receive an admission letter through the portal.
•Pay the admission/acceptance fees at the designated bank.
•Report to school with your receipts and documents for registration.
8. Duration of Nursing Training Programmes in Ghana
•Registered General Nursing (RGN): 3 years (Diploma)
•Registered Midwifery (RM): 3 years (Diploma)
•Registered Mental Nursing: 3 years (Diploma)
•Post-Basic Programmes: 1–2 years (for those upgrading)
Pro Tip: Always apply early once admissions open (usually April – July each year). Nursing training admissions are very competitive, so ensure your grades meet the cut-off and prepare well for the interview.
